LEEDS READING FEST VIDEO REPORT
The Kaiser Chiefs manager & long standing friend Mick Webster rang me at home after the Leeds Festival to tell me that Ricky Wilson the frontman singer had a bottle thrown at him while performing their first song. The bottle broke Ricky's nose and there was blood ... but Ricky kept singing and completed the Kaiser's set ... can't the guy take a hint !
ELEPHANTS ON ACID
DEBUT ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 2009
THE RECESSION SONG
WHEN it comes to singing the credit-crunch blues, no-one is more qualified than this musical Leeds trio.
The recently unemployed group of pals - all talented musicians - have decided to stick two fingers up at the economic downturn and sing their way through the recession .
They have come up with their own booming hip-hop anthem for the credit crunch generation - The Recession Song - and are all set to release it as a single.
The group consists of rappers/singers Saiqa Rehman (aka Miss Sykes) Simon Wilkinson (MC Ill-Literate) and singer songwriter Ben Hannah.
Ben, 22, from Hyde Park, was forced to leave his city centre call centre job just before Christmas.
Saiqa, 27, from Harehills, is fighting to make ends meet after losing her job in a music store.
Simon, 22, also from Harehills, is also unemployed.
The trio met in 2008 while performing at Lyrically Justified, the weekly ˜open mic ™ night held at Leeds Carpe Diem bar.
When the credit crunch hit them personally, the three decided to team up. Ben, who plays with his own punk bank Acid Drop, had already come up with a catchy hook and chorus, but sat down with Saika and Simon to turn it into a rap - and The Recession Song was born.
With lyrics like "my country's in depression in the darkness of recession! and "you can't even cry for the price of a tissue", the song is an angry diatribe against the money-men and a call for unity among the recession-hit masses.
"I haven't got a job, Simon's not working and Ben got made redundant just before Christmas," Saiqa explained about writing the song.
"We just talked about how we felt about the recession. "We did it all pretty much in 24 hours because we were buzzing so much we wanted to finish it.
"People have really been supporting us and when we play it, people of all ages put their hands up to us.
" wanted it to relate to people.
"Whether you are signing on or looking for a job, or just struggling because you have four kids and food prices are high, the recession is affecting everyone.
"We want them to channel their anger and energy and feelings through our song and believe that if we stick together, we can come through it together." The Recession Song will be released for download on i-Tunes on May 9.
Some lyrics from The Recession Song: My country's in depression, in the darkness of recession, "Every single day now I'm counting my blessings. "Singled out my soul as a cog in the system, "Draining my ambition, this tradition is a mission. In recession, full of rage, and aggression, Now you're caught in repossession. Losses of jobs, now you left my people broke; Food prices risen, and they're better off in prison. My heart goes out , my pocket bleeds with you folks.
LEMMY DEAD !
Well there fellas have ya read the news, ‘Lemmy dead‘.
Well ya don’t think that Lemmy would have ruined it for Michael Jackson. It would only be right to wait while the world settles down again, definitely wouldn’t have wanted to steel MJ’s limelight, after all Lemmy was one of the biggest MJ fans to walk this Earth. Ya should see Lemmy ‘Moonwalk’ especially after a bottle of Jack’s.
No, Lemmy ain’t that cheap that he would steal somebody elses gig. If ya gonna die then ya need to make sure ya get all the press, don’t wanna be sharing it with crazy Whacko Jacko. Especially when ya still got Poland ( Szczytno ) to liberate on the 27th of July 2009 and then take Germany by storm from the east on the 31st. Then later on to the USA to celebrate the victories of Eastern Europe.
And neither would this be a cheap trick to try and hype his biographical film, ‘Lemmy The Movie’. Nor would it be a fast one to try and revamp old sales on his legendary computer game ‘Lemmings’.
No I can definitely say that Lemmy is not dead, not yet anyway ! He will be around for a long time to come yet after pickling his liver and other vital organs with a bottle or two of Jack Daniels per day. And all that white powder that he feed into his body via his nostrils as turned into a cement like paste that as coated his skeleton and made his bones stronger.
Yeah, Lemmy is built to last, built for speed and will last a few more years yet, or ya money back guaranteed. ( see label for details ).
I don’t wanna live forever. ( But he’s not played the Joker yet ).
Long live Lemmy.
Aces & Jack’s Steve D Parker.
PS. I can just imagine Lemmy’s funeral. A flight case coffin with it’s skulls for handles, stencilled with the Motorhead logo, and the headstock of his Ricky stuck out of the side.
A line of speed sprinkled from one end of the lid to the other, a rolled up five pound note and a row of JD’s awaiting.
A chorus or two of ‘Born To Raise Hell’ played to the spinning wheels of a one armed bandit.
